ABOUT

The history of Fairfax Corner

Up until the 1980s the premises were home to Dooley’s Grocery Shop, a firm favourite with local people, and still remembered with affection by many who came here for their childhood sweet ration or daily grocery order.

Fast forward to 2022, and we now share the building with a local community enterprise, Refill Kitchen. Their role is to provide a welcoming community hub, serving good coffee and snacks and making available, for free, surplus stock from allotments, supermarkets and the like. They operate in the daytime, and are entirely separate from the self-catering accommodation.

Meet the owners

Fairfax Corner’s owners Shan and Bill live in Knaresborough, but are on hand if needed and supported by an enthusiastic team. The house was their home for many years, and still they love it dearly. Shan and Bill have tried to maintain that ‘lived in feel’, as opposed to a more impersonal approach to the décor – they want you to feel at home and welcome in the house.

The guest book

  • “Fabulous location for visiting the city, everything is in walking distance. Having parking is a real bonus. Admire the attempt to create an eco-friendly house, which is on-going. The idea of a Community Fridge in the cafe is a great idea. Sadly it wasn't open during our stay so we were not able to see it in action.”

  • We had a great stay. The house has everything you need and the location is wonderful. The house felt nice and warm, there were books and plenty of comfy chairs. You are near the shops, the station, the city centre, anything is within 10 minutes' walking distance. And you get a view of the city walls on top of that.

  • Fairfax Eco House provided the best stay I’ve had in York, and we’ll definitely book it again! The location is as convenient as beautiful, stocked with everything you could wish for. Thank you for a wonderful city break! March 2022

  • “If you’re looking for a modern, ultra-sleek property, then this place probably isn’t for you. But if you want to stay in a home with character and charm, that doesn’t cost the earth (in more ways than one), then you’d be hard pressed to find better. Wonderful location, excellent communication and table tennis in the basement. What more could you want!”

  • “If you’re taking a trip to York, you won’t find a better value place to stay. Great location within the city walls, in a quiet street. Lots of space for 4 people. Full of charm, will definitely be booking again.”

  • Slide title

“Absolutely great. The location was perfect, just a short walk from city centre but so quiet and peaceful at the house. Great little courtyard too. The house is roomy, and we had a great time. Even played table tennis down in the cellar! Would definitely stay there again when we go back to York to explore more.”
